The best thing about belonging, or rather, being born into a family like mine is the traditions and cultures that have been followed and kept and started by our ancestors. My family has all these traditions and the parents/elders do their best in keeping it alive. There are some traditions I don't agree with but I do it because it means a lot to this family and it's a sign of disrespect. The values that my family gives the younger generations do so much, in ways us kids don't even realize until we get older. I believe that traditional families like mine, well, they actually do raise their kids right even if a lot of the actions that have to be done may come out as a little extreme. But I have to say, it pays off. Especially now that media and society feeds the youth so much bullshit.
Respect: My family believes that respect is one of the key values of life (especially in respecting the elders). The elders are so strict when it comes to Respect. If you dare answer back to any of the parents, they will make sure you feel like total crap and you will never disrespect them again. Sometimes, it gets out of hand but that already depends on the culture of the family. Our elders believe in discipline and punishment. Some cultures don't believe in it but fear is something that my family believes in. It's the same way in Christianity wherein they believe in Fear of the Lord. We need to fear to learn how to love and respect someone or rather, the great Dude up there.
Discipline: This comes with every family i'm sure but for my family, this is something so serious that the parents really drill this in your head and if you don't follow them, they will make sure things don't go your way. When you come from a family with a shit load of money... well, this comes in handy. I didn't like it when I was younger but now that I'm older, I see why my parents drilled this in my head. It puts order in your life in many ways you don't even see. It helps in the growth of a child and even better... the growth of a person. With discipline, you can place things at the right place at the right time. You know how to act in front of people and you know how to face consequences. Your choices are also affected. The law of Reaction is best understood with discipline in your life.
Talent: My family does everything and anything to make sure that every child in the family grows up with a talent. They force activities on the kids until the child finds something to be passionate about. This is usually connected to the ARTS. The elders believe when a child has a talent, they become focused and passionate. It does pay of when you get older. In my family, it's music. Music pays a huge roll in the culture of my family and every child is required to learn an instrument. We all start off with learning how to play the piano and as we get older, we choose an instrument to focus on. The elders believe that music teachers conviction, passion, and focus. They believe that it molds the mind of a child and when they get older they will know how to appreciate sound and life. This has been passed on from generation to generation.
Ethics: This is the foundation of my family. This is exposed to every child in my family and I cannot thank my ancestors enough for implementing 'ethics' into the family. Ethics teaches us kids how to give meaning into everything. It teaches us how to reason out situations. It teaches us how to overcome difficulties. It teaches us many things and my family believes that you're never too young to understand ethics.
