is freedom of expression defined when people say whatever they want to say, whenever they want to say? should people learn how to keep some things to themselves? what do you think? 

in my opinion, people don’t understand the concept of “freedom of expression” or rather the meaning of it. now let’s dissect that phrase, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION.

Freedom is not doing what you feel like doing at any time, any where. most people would define freedom as something that entails the ability and capacity to fully express one’s individuality. now who says that’s wrong? of course it’s not wrong. that definition is absolutely correct. but i think there are a few things missing in that definition, it should be “freedom entails the ability and capacity to fully express one’s individuality with the use of their intellect and will.” us humans, we forget to use that sometimes. our intellect and will is the power that sets us apart from all the other mammals that exist in this world and with that fact, we should be able to understand that freedom is expressing your individuality by knowing the boundaries of the things we are trying to expressing, learning how to respect others with that, and being able to intellectually defend the things we express.
Freedom of expression is also a form of communication and most of us abuse that. we have the model of communication (by shannon and weaven) and it says that first there is the sender which sends out the message that goes through a channel then reaches the receiver. now the message that your “freedom of speech” sends out, will be received by another person and did it ever occur to you that there people who will actually listen to you and trust in what you say? don’t you agree that we also have to be careful about what we express because not only will people listen to you but it will affect the youth. another topic that is talked about a lot and the youth [today] lives and breathes through freedom of expression.

We all have to understand that we are responsible with the things we express through art, music, poetry, etc. we have to know the boundaries we’re crossing when we say whatever we want to say. AGAIN, people can express what they believe and think but don’t do it if you can’t explain yourself. you can’t go around announcing that God doesn’t exist and just say some lame ass reason on why YOU think he doesn’t exist. you’re already crossing the line with religion, might as well have a good explanation because i can fight you back and tell you why I personally believe God exists. that’s ME expressing my beliefs and i understand that i’m responsible for whatever i say.

Freedom of Expression should be based on the intellectual side of a person. Not the emotional side. although it does come out as something emotional… i agree… but there’s always a line between logic and emotions. Knowledge is our power, we should use it when we express ourselves. we have the 3 levels of knowledge and those are: 1. Common Sense, 2. Science, 3. Philosophy. we should take those three things into consideration when we’re trying to express ourselves.
My conclusion would be, people SHOULD learn how to keep things private when they don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about and they can’t back up their reasoning. Freedom of expression is NOT saying or doing whatever you want to say.
